Joella Yates
December 15, 1953 - November 21, 2025
Joella Yates 71, of Deland, Florida, transitioned to her eternal home on Friday, November 21, 2025.
Joella Peterson Yates was born on December 15, 1953, in Daytona Beach, Florida, to the late Jimmy Peterson and Oletha Paige. She lived a life marked by service, compassion, and unwavering faith. She was educated in the Volusia County School District and proudly graduated from Mainland Senior High School, Class of 1971.
Joella dedicated 15 years to Volusia County Schools, beginning her career as a teacher’s aide before becoming a Mental Health Technician. In this role, she served in the Special Education Department, supporting teachers and assisting students with their daily needs. After her time with VCSD, she continued her work in education at Daytona Beach Community College, serving as registrar for the General Education Diploma Program and guiding students through the enrollment process.
Joella later found her true calling at the Domestic Abuse Council, where she served as a case manager. She led weekly support groups, provided individual counseling, and offered care to women in transitional housing. Her commitment and leadership led her to become Shelter Manager, where she supported staff, maintained essential records, and ensured the well-being of every client who walked through the doors. Joella retired from the Domestic Abuse Council after 18 years of devoted service.
A woman of deep faith, Joella loved the Lord, and her joyful and powerful praises could always be heard in church. She enjoyed preparing homemade meals for her family and friends, traveling, shopping, and a lively game of Spades, complete with playful trash-talking. Joella had a loving spirit and a generous heart, and she never met a stranger.
Joella was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter R. Yates. She leaves to cherish her memory two devoted daughters, Demeteria Peterson Patterson of Lakeland, Florida, and Juanique Yates of Daytona Beach, Florida; two dearly loved grandchildren, Kirsten Patterson and Anthony Sheldon, Jr.; one brother, Vincent Barron (Maryann) of Daytona Beach, FL; one sister, Thelma Johnson (Jonnie) of Daytona Beach, FL; close friends Mr. Johnnie and Cora George, Colete Sheppard Slater, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other grieving family and friends.
The staff of Alonia's Cremation & Urns extends our heartfelt condolences to the Yates family.
