Bernard Coffey Obituary

Bernard Burkes Coffey

August 3, 1949 - July 28, 2025

“Blessed are those who die in the Lord…they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them”.  Revelation 14:13
With heartfelt gratitude to God for a life well lived, we celebrate the homegoing of our beloved brother, Bernard Burkes Coffey, who departed this life on July 28, 2025, at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, FLorida.
Bernard was born on August 3, 1949, to Bernice Burkes and Willie J. Burkes in Daytona Beach, FLorida. He was lovingly raised in Live Oak, Florida, by Oliver and Rose Lee Coffey. He attended school in Live Oak and graduated from Douglas High School in 1968.
After graduation, Bernard returned to Daytona Beach, where he spent the rest of his life.  Bernard worked diligently for many years as a professional truck driver, traveling highways with dedication and pride. He also had a deep love for car racing and was a faithful supporter of his favorite teams, the Florida State Seminoles and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Bernard lived a life marked by quiet strength, loyalty, and a heart for those he loved. He was a man of deep faith who believed in God’s promises and internal peace.
He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Lula Coffey, his parents, Bernice Gainey and Willie J. Burkes, stepdad, James Gainey Sr., Brothers, James Gainey Jr and Napoleon E. Gainey, Oliver and Rose Lee Coffey, and a devoted cousin, Eddie James Johnson.
He leaves to cherish his memory his sisters Willie M. Burkes- Crooks (Verne) Denver, Co, Fannie Burkes, Jeanette Gainey-Fallins (William), and Angela Gainey-Glasper, all of St. Petersburg, Fl, Gloria Gainey, Riverview, Fl, Annie Gainey-Williams (James), Macon, GA and brother Maurice E. Gainey, Ormond Beach, FL.
Also cherishing his memory are his devoted friend, Gertrude Mingo, honorary daughter Tracey Davis (Terrance), honorary grandson Tristen Davis, his beloved uncle, William Sanders (Mary) of Miami Gardens, FL, aunt Johnny Mae Kennedy of Newark, NJ, cousins Jackie Ford and Alfred Kennedy, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends whose lives he touched with love laughter, and kindness.
Though Bernard’s earthly journey has ended, he walks the streets of glory, healed, whole, and at peace in the presence of the Lord.
